This Memorial Day Weekend marks the 54th Anniversary of the General Clinton Canoe Regatta, a full weekend of events that are sponsored by the Bainbridge Chamber of Commerce.  The highlight of the weekend is the regatta  – an endurance race that takes place on Memorial Day (Monday, May 30) with contestants launching in the morning from Otsego Lake in Cooperstown and ending 70 miles down the Susquehanna River in Bainbridge, NY that same evening.  

Spectators will gather at dawn on Monday morning at Lakefront Park in Cooperstown to view the spectacle of over 1000 paddlers launching their canoes and getting set up for the race start.  Following the launch, visitors and friends will cheer on their loved ones at various sites along the shores of the river throughout the route.  

There are six different classes of races for the day that begin between 6am and 8am.  There are three portage areas along the route: Bassett Dam, Goodyear Lake and Southside Dam.  We wish all the regatta participants a day of wonderful weather and safe passages throughout their day!  Good luck to all.

June is very likely the best month of the year for a relaxing visit to the Cooperstown Area. The weather is warm, but not too hot; everything is open for the season, but it is still on the quiet side.  Although many schools in the southern US finish their year in May, most schools in the Northeast don’t get out until mid to late June.  Family vacation season starts in July!

Each year, since 2005, our region hosts Earth Festival, an environmental awareness event at the Milford Central School, about 10 miles south of Cooperstown, NY.  This is the one time of year when most of our local environmentally-focused  organizations are together in the same room as a public awareness event.  This year, the event takes place on Saturday, April 9th from 11am to 3pm.

The event has grown significantly over the years and includes around 40 vendors and exhibitors, workshops and seminars throughout the day, children’s activities and great food options and a number of specialty recycling options including a confidential document shredder service, clean styrofoam, textiles (shoes) and more.  This year, there are yoga sessions that have been added to the event for both adults and children,to encourage healthy minds and bodies as a start to creating a healthy environment.

We are extremely fortunate to have world class venues and museums in our region that bring amazing opportunities to our local population and our seasonal visitors.  The Fenimore Art Museum is one such venue, situated just outside of the Village of Cooperstown on the southern end of Otsego Lake on the west shore, across from the Farmers’ Museum.  The museum is housed in a 1930’s neo-Georgian mansion on a site that was once part of James Fenimore Cooper’s 150 acre farm.  

This year, the Fenimore Art Museum brings the early works of Ansel Adams as a featured  exhibit that will run from April 1st through September 18.  Adams is known for his stunning black and white landscape photographs and is considered as both a groundbreaking  American photographer and an environmentalist.  He served as a member of the Board of Directors for the Sierra Club for 37 years and was committed to wilderness preservation.  He was recognized with the Conservation Service award in 1968 by the Department of the Interior and with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1980.

The Cooperstown area has a long history of involvement in the craft beverage industry.  It was originally known as the hops growing capital of the world and we are now seeing farms dedicated to hops again over the last few years.  Looking into some of the Cooperstown region’s highlights, we were reminded that the Cooperstown Beverage Trail is an ever expanding opportunity.  While it was originally established with four beverage producers, it has grown to include eight establishments in our region that offer locally produced goods.
